Sassafras Roots – Green Day |
] |
Someone left an orange at this computer. It’s leaving me with flash backs of my childhood. You know, Piccolo and such. Today we were supposed to pull into Bahrain for three days of liberty. I know for certain that it will be cut down at least to two days. How do I know this you ask? Because, my friend we did not pull into Bahrain today. Losing one of three days of liberty in itself isn’t such a let down. God knows we pull into port often. The part that sucks is that we were scheduled to pull in hours before a certain large ship with a flat top pulled in. The “carrier locusts” as I have come know them. They were fortunate enough to arrive today, which means when we when we do get liberty tomorrow, the NEX will surely be in short supply of essentials. The bars, however, will be jumpin jumpin; and I have yet to decide if that’s going to be a good thing. Probably not. The reason we couldn’t pull in today was because of a sandstorm. Heavy winds and such. Asi es la vida, right? Oh well. My main concern right now is that there will be calling cards left. I promised to call a certain wife of mine. More to follow… I shall return with a story of shopping, drinking, and adventure in foreign lands. I was listening to Sigur Ros earlier. I learned of them by listening to launchcast.com, which was one of my favorite websites (along with this one) when I worked at Subway. My first cd of theirs was called “Agaetis Byrjun” and it was given to me by Joey as a Christmas present. Christmas was spent at Papa’s house that year. I have since become a huge fan of the Sigur Ros, as they are one of my favorite bands. Book Update: The Dark Tower III – The Waste Lands Roland and his pals have finally made it to Lud. There was a close call on the bridge with Oy, but hes ok… for now. Jake on the other hand has been captured by the Grays. Susannah and Eddie are on their way to find Blaine the train whilst Roland tries to save Jake.

Today was not the greatest of days. I went to get breakfast this morning and didn't get my eggs; which is the only reason I ever go to breakfast. I had to settle for some mini wheats cereal and french toast. Then I decided to take a nap before work. Apparently I was a lot more tired than I thought. I wasn't late but Gackle knocking on my door woke me up, which made me feel like a crappy supervisor. So I get to work and im pretty grumpy. I set my water bottle on the ground like I always do; except today I was a little less gentle. The freakin think cracked and I had to throw it away. I loved that water bottle! Victoria and I bought it before I left on cruise specifically to hold my special fiji water. Obviously I ran out of fiji a long time ago but the bottle was still keeping me well hydrated. Now I have to wait until we get to a port with an NEX to get another bottle. We had an extremely hectic flight schedule today... Which made shift change a monster cluster fuck. Normally I wouldn't care. I would just lay low and ride it out... But not supervisor big daddy kurt. I guess the silver lining to this story is the ice cream socials we always have after our once weekly all day flight schedule. Also, I shaved my head again today.
In other news: Im going to attempt to get back into writing poetry-ish stuff. I have a line in my head at the moment... I just need to build off of it.
Ive lost 10 lbs since leaving.

This is the closest I've ever been to writing at 4:30am on a Tuesday while listening to this song, haha. There is so much that I want to say, but when I finally get here, I'm overwhelmed because I haven't updated in so long. So, I've decided I'm just going hit the ground running and the gaps will be filled as time goes by. However, there is one thing that I need to mention before we start.
My grandfather (known as Papa to myself and all the people closest to me) passed away September 11, 2008. That morning, I was aboard the USS Nassau getting ready to take the E-5 exam for the first time. There is a funny story to be told about the exam but I'll save it for another day (if Victoria reminds me). I can't remember how much time passed after the test before I found out but it couldn't have been more than a day or two. I do remember, though, that I had been out to sea for a couple days already and needed to call Victoria (as promised) badly. The ship had pay phones... HOWEVER... a) you could only use phone cards purchased on the ship b) you could only purchase things with prepaid cash card c) you could only acquire said cash card by bringing cash on the ship Lucky for me, the guy who slept in the rack right next to mine (my current roommate) let me borrow $20. Well, I got to call Victoria and, as they say, the rest is history. The ship was on its way to Galveston, TX for hurricane relief and we happened to be "mid-florida" at the time. I flew in a helicopter for the first time (one of the ones I worked on) and was dropped off in Ft. Lauderdale. I proceeded to rent a car (also a first) and went straight to papa's house in Tampa, 3-4 hours away. The Packers were playing the Lions that day and I got to listen to the updates during the drive. I guess that's all I have to say about that. I think that's enough for today. I just felt like it needed to be said. You can probably expect future entries to be littered with random Papa memories. On a lighter note, there is still so much I need to document since my last entry (the one before the one previous to this one). I went to New York on that same ship for example. Now that is a heck of a story... if I can remember enough of it to stay interesting, haha. Two more things I'd like to add! I advanced on that E-5 exam. I'm a 2nd Class Petty Officer... and I give the credit directly to Papa, who I believe was watching over me that day. Also, we received the humanitarian award for the hurricane relief... and even though I didn't make it to Texas, I believe I still get to wear the ribbon. Oh! And one more thing... I am a shift supervisor. Can you believe that shit?

I was actually on a ship for the first time in my 3 1/2 year navy career. We didn't leave port... but i was on a ship. I believe we'll either leave on the 10th or the 15th officially. But yeah... ships are sucky. Don't know how well i'll handle it.
Speaking of 'visiting' the USS Nassau... i saw Chorniak. I can't remember where the fuck i know him from... but i know him.
My seabag is still on the ship.

So it seems i may finally go on a ship after all... Due to hurricane Gustav, i shall be deploying to the gulf for hurricane relief. Hah, not the gulf i thought i would be deploying to for my first stint on a ship, but a gulf non-the-less. I dont know how long this will take (hopefully people will get a clue and evacuate in time) but i guess i will see you guys on the flip-side.
I LOVE YOU VICTORIA!!!!!! i hope you read this while im gone... i love you sweetheart. hopefully my cell works while im gone. it should. if not, i'll call you every chance i get. jill is laying next to me right now and she also hopes you get this.
peace out peeps.

Update: we didnt go to harbor fest. We paid like 5 bucks for garage parking just for some bike-cop to tell us they probably werent going to allow our dog in :/ (her name is Jill the beagle)
Im down to 17 months in the navy. The Packers first preseason game is on monday and Im really excited. It's now the Aaron Rodgers Era because Favre retired and then unretired and now he's on the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS.
Anywho... Joey left for marine boot camp about a week and a half ago. I wrote him a letter. Don't know if he got it yet but Im impatiently awaiting his letter.
Victoria and i saw Counting Crows on July 25. It was spectacular. Better than last time i saw them... but can't say it topped my second Tool show. That aside... Counting Crows are tied with Tool for my favorite band; and sometimes i think they have the edge. Neither band has ever come out with a cd that made me question if i liked it.

Tomorrow when Vick gets off of work... we'll go to Harborfest.
Victoria is laying on the floor with Jill on the other side of the room. Can't wait for football season to start.

i will update more often starting now.
biggest news in recent history (in my life anyway): i turned 21 and saw billy joel. however, with the combined excitment of legally engaging in one of my favorite pass times and finally seeing one of my idols led to an over-consumption and a loss of voice. end result: i dont remember much of the concert. oh well, i know better for next time.
so ill be working at a new duty station in 7-8 months. due to lack of options (although this one isnt so bad) i currently have my eye on Andrews AFB (Air Force Base) in Maryland. Ask if you would like to know more.
(i havent written anything new in over a year now... so here's a rerun)
